The Seamless Guide to Preparing for Your Deep Teeth Cleaning With Dr. Barbaro

Patient receiving a deep tooth cleaning

Preparing for a deep teeth cleaning is a strategic process that involves adjusting your daily schedule, reviewing your medical history, and managing pre-visit anxiety. Proper pre-appointment preparation ensures your scaling and root planing procedure at Chatham Family & Implant Dentistry is completely comfortable, highly efficient, and optimized for rapid healing.

Should You Floss Before Your Deep Cleaning?

It is a common scenario: you have a deep cleaning scheduled for tomorrow, so you spend 20 minutes aggressively brushing and flossing to make your teeth look as clean as possible. In dentistry, we call this “panic flossing,” and you should actually avoid it. Because you have active periodontal disease, your gums are already highly inflamed, swollen, and prone to bleeding.  Medical literature supports that Periodontal disease is classically characterized by progressive destruction of the soft and hard tissues of the periodontal complex [1] (Sedghi et al., 2021). Aggressive brushing right before your appointment will only further irritate your soft tissues, making your gums unnecessarily tender before the appointment begins. In the days leading up to your visit to Chatham Family & Implant Dentistry, simply maintain your normal, gentle hygiene routine. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and do not worry about impressing us.

Planning Your Workday Around Your Pittsboro Visit

For the ambitious professionals in the Triangle, taking time off work can be difficult. The good news is that a deep cleaning is a non-surgical procedure, meaning you do not need to take the entire day off. However, a little strategic calendar planning will make your day much smoother.

Because we use local anesthetics to keep you comfortable, half of your mouth will remain numb for 2 to 3 hours after your appointment. While you can safely drive yourself back to the office and respond to emails, you will want to avoid scheduling any major presentations, sales pitches, or client lunches immediately following your visit. Block out a quiet afternoon at your desk, and by the time you clock out, the numbness will have completely faded.

Coordinating Periodontal Care with Your Primary Doctor

Your mouth is the gateway to your entire body. If you are a health-conscious patient managing a chronic systemic condition, preparing for your deep cleaning might require a quick conversation with your primary care physician. For example, if you have Type 2 Diabetes, uncontrolled blood sugar can slow down your gum healing process. Keeping your glucose levels stable before your visit helps support the best possible recovery. Additionally, if you have recently had a major joint replacement or have specific cardiovascular conditions, your doctor may require you to take a preventive course of antibiotics 1 hour before your dental cleaning to protect your bloodstream from bacteria. When you book your appointment, always share your complete medical history so we can coordinate your care safely.

Overcoming Pre-Appointment Dental Anxiety

Clinical literature supports that Dental anxiety is one of the most common conditions present amongst the masses globally [2] (Muneer et al., 2022). If a bad dental experience in your past is causing you to dread your upcoming deep cleaning, your mental preparation is just as important as your physical preparation. Holding onto anxiety puts your nervous system into a fight-or-flight state, which can actually make it harder for local anesthetics to do their job effectively. You are no longer subjected to the painful, aggressive scraping. At our Pittsboro clinic, we utilize the “Tell-Show-Do” communication method. We promise to explain every step before we proceed, and you remain the absolute boss of your appointment. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, we will stop the procedure immediately. Knowing you have total control is the fastest way to alleviate pre-visit anxiety.

The Periodontal Probing

Before we use our ultrasonic water scalers, your hygienist will perform a quick, baseline diagnostic check called “periodontal probing.” Clinical literature suggests that probing clinical pocket depth and attachment level have been recognized as the dentist’s most important tools in diagnosing periodontal health and disease [3] (Hefti, 1997). You will hear your hygienist calling out a series of numbers to a dental assistant. They are using a tiny, ruler-like instrument to gently measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and your gums. Healthy gums have a pocket depth of 1 to 3 millimeters. Pockets that measure 4 millimeters or deeper indicate active gum disease. Capturing these exact measurements right before your cleaning gives us a precise, customized baseline. When you return for your maintenance visit three months later, we use these same numbers to proudly show you exactly how much your gums have healed and reattached!

FAQS

1. Should I take pain medication before my deep cleaning appointment?

Generally, you do not need to pre-medicate for pain. Our clinical team will use professional-grade topical gels and local anesthetics to ensure you are entirely numb before the procedure begins. However, if you suffer from extreme dental anxiety, speak with our doctors beforehand about safe relaxation protocols.

2. What should I eat the morning of my scaling and root planing procedure?

We highly recommend eating a solid, nutritious meal before you arrive. Because half of your mouth will be numb for 2 to 3 hours after the visit, you will need to stick to lukewarm, soft foods (like smoothies or yogurt) later that afternoon. Eating a hearty breakfast prevents you from feeling hungry or jittery during your recovery.

3. Will I be fully numb during the procedure?

Yes. To safely remove the hardened tartar from deep beneath your gumline, we use highly precise, localized anesthetics. You will feel a mild vibrating sensation from our ultrasonic water tools and gentle pressure, but you will not experience any sharp, scraping pain.
